Mukesh Chhabra backs TV actors after Rohit Roy's dustbin comment, Hina Khan reacts

Casting director Mukesh Chhabra has backed television actors amid the row over Rohit Roy’s remarks on the medium. Without naming Rohit or directly referring to his comments, Mukesh praised television actors for their discipline, professionalism and ability to adapt to the demands of the job. Actor Hina Khan also responded to his post.

His post came after Rohit described television as a “dustbin medium” and said cinema was “for posterity” in a recent interview. The remarks drew criticism from television actors including Devoleena Bhattacharjee and Naman Shaw, who objected to his comments about an industry they said had given him work and recognition.

Taking to X, Mukesh wrote, "Most of the actors we have found are from television, and I truly believe television actors are amazing. They have an incredible memory, they work every single day, they are extremely professional, they adapt quickly, and they know how to handle the demands of the job. The discipline, dedication, and commitment they bring to their work is something I deeply admire. I love all actors, but I think I have a little extra love for TV actors. Just a thought. Sunday feelings (sic)."

Hina Khan, who rose to fame with popular television show Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, reacted to his post, saying, "Hugggssss (sic)."

Rohit Roy faced flak after he described television as a "dustbin medium" and said films were for "posterity".

Speaking on the Kindle Cast YouTube channel, when asked whether the television industry had become more professional but less devoted to the craft, he said, "This question has been asked of me several times, and I sometimes feel that I shouldn’t come across as ungrateful. But, television is a dustbin medium. You watch it today, it’s like yesterday’s newspaper. Tomorrow, you forget about it. So, in India, unfortunately, with the amount of content being created and the same kind of content being created, there’s hardly any creativity."

He also said, "Quite honestly, television actors don’t have the carriage that film actors have," and added, "You have to conduct yourself with a certain amount of grace, dignity. You can’t do hoo-haa and make stupid comments because you know the paps are there," while referring to an unnamed TV star. When the host told him that he seemed to have "internalised this hierarchy", Rohit replied that "cinema is for posterity" and again called television a dustbin medium.Backlash from television actors

Devoleena Bhattacharjee criticised Rohit Roy over the remarks, saying he was insulting the medium that had given him work and visibility. In an interaction with IANS, she said, "People have a strange habit of biting the hand that feeds them, of poking holes in the very plate they eat from, and his words feel exactly like that. Forget about movies, I honestly don’t even remember which TV series he was in. If I am being honest, most people only know him as Ronit Roy’s brother."

Actor Naman Shaw also criticised Rohit Roy’s comments, saying television had given him work, recognition, opportunities and a career over the past two decades, and that an entire medium should not be dismissed because of the behaviour of a few people. He added, "I genuinely feel that too much Botox has perhaps gone beyond the first layer of his forehead, travelled straight into his brain and frozen it."

Mukesh has been the casting director for films like Dhurandhar, Jawan and Dangal.
