The Mukkam police on Wednesday took into custody two youths who allegedly intercepted and attacked a private bus at Poolappoyil. The incident occurred around 4.40 p.m. on the Edavanna-Koyilandy State highway. The bus, travelling from Manjeri to Omasery via Mukkam, was carrying several passengers, including students.
According to the police and passengers, the youths in an inebriated state attempted to stop the bus by signalling to the driver at Agastyamuzhi. The driver did not stop, citing the steep and winding stretch of road. The youths allegedly followed the bus on a motorcycle and intercepted it at Poolappoyil.
They allegedly placed the motorcycle across the road, forcing the bus to stop, and smashed the glass panel of the door before entering the bus and assaulting the driver and others, according to passengers and bus staff. One of the youths sustained a hand injury while reportedly smashing the glass panel.
Local residents and the bus staff restrained the two youths and informed the police. A team from the Mukkam police station reached the spot and took them into custody.
