(Photo: Provincial Police Region 2) Two married couples from Myanmar, wanted in connection with the killing of their Chinese employer in Bangkok, have surrendered to police after hiding in sugarcane fields in Phanat Nikhom district of Chon Buri.
More than 100 officers from the Phanat Nikhom police station, Lat Krabang station in Bangkok, local officials and rescue workers were deployed to search for the four suspects in Phanat Nikhom late on Wednesday night.
The suspects had fled Lat Krabang following the killing of their employer and were reported to be hiding in more than 100 rai of sugarcane fields spanning Village Moo 9 in tambon Hua Thanon and Village Moo 1 in tambon Sra Seeliam.
Officers cordoned off the area and deployed drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras to detect movement and pressure the suspects to surrender.
After more than five hours, the four emerged from the sugarcane fields and approached a rescue worker.
The rescue worker said he was keeping watch when he saw two men and two women emerge from the fields. He recognised them from the photos he had seen, so he questioned them and they admitted they had fled there after the fatal attack, he said.
The suspects then asked for drinking water and food, saying they were exhausted after hiding in the fields for an extended period. They decided to surrender voluntarily, prompting the rescue worker to alert police.
An initial check confirmed that the four were wanted under arrest warrants issued by the Min Buri Court in Bangkok. Police informed them of the warrants before taking them into custody and handing them over to Lat Krabang police for questioning and legal action.
The suspects were accused of beating and stabbing two Chinese employers at a construction workers’ camp in Lat Krabang on Tuesday night, killing one and seriously injuring the other, before fleeing with about 50,000 baht in wages.
The attack was believed to have stemmed from an argument after the workers asked to resign. Their bosses reportedly refused to pay the wages owed because the workers had failed to give advance notice as agreed.
