N1 closed after crash near Leeu Gamka leaves 21 dead - IOL

WESTERN Cape authorities are rallying to respond to a devastating multiple-vehicle crash on the N1 near Leeu Gamka, resulting in 21 deaths. 

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), a collision involving three vehicles occurred at approximately 11.30am on Sunday between Leeu Gamka and Prins Albert in the Western Cape. 

The crash involved two Toyota Quantum taxis and a Suzuki Brezza SUV. 

The RTMC said in a statement: “Preliminary information received by the RTMC indicates that 21 people have sustained fatal injuries. 

“The cause of the crash has not yet been established and remains under investigation by the RTMC crash investigators who are en route to establish more facts.”

The Western Cape Government confirmed emergency, medical, traffic and forensic teams remain at the scene. 

The national road was closed in both directions and motorists are strongly advised to avoid the N1 between Laingsburg and Beaufort West and use alternative routes where possible.

The only available alternative route is via Prince Albert Road Station, along the R407 towards the N12, and then continuing on the N12 towards Beaufort West. This alternative route is approximately 200 km.

Western Cape Minister of Mobility Isaac Sileku said: “This is a devastating loss of life. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives in this tragic collision. 

“Our traffic and emergency response teams are working tirelessly at the scene under challenging conditions.”

Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger said the focus is also on those who have been injured and the teams caring for them.

Wenger added: “Several other passengers have also sustained serious injuries, and we wish them strength as they receive the care they need. I also want to express my sincere gratitude to our Emergency Medical Services personnel, healthcare workers and all first responders who have worked through the night to respond to this tragedy and care for those affected.”

Provincial SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies said that a culpable homicide docket was opened as investigations at the crash site continue.

Spies reported: “Leeu Gamka police opened a culpable homicide docket after 21 victims succumbed following an accident on the N1 at Leeu Gamka on Sunday, 13 September 2026 at about 23:30. 

“According to information available at this stage, emergency personnel were summoned to the scene after three vehicles collided. 

“Upon arrival. police found two Toyota minibus taxis which collided head-on and a Suzuki station wagon which collided with one of the taxis. 

“A total of 18 occupants sustained multiple injuries and were declared deceased. Three occupants also sustained serious injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. 

“They were declared deceased on arrival, bringing the total fatalities to 21. Several other occupants were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. 

The cause of the accident is yet to be established and it forms part of the ongoing police investigation into the accident.”
