Nahoon Beach still closed after another shark sighting - TimesLIVE
Nahoon Beach in KuGompo City, formerly East London, remains closed after another shark sighting on Sunday morning, with beachgoers warned to stay out of the water until further notice.
Buffalo City metropolitan municipality (BCMM) said the closure was a precautionary measure to protect the public.
“BCMM wishes to inform the public that Nahoon Beach will remain temporarily closed following another shark sighting this Sunday morning. As a precautionary measure, all bathers and beachgoers are strongly warned not to enter the water until further notice.”
The municipality urged members of the public to comply with safety instructions issued by beach officials.
It did not provide a timeline for the beach’s reopening, saying further updates would be issued once it was considered safe for the public to return.
The latest sighting comes days after a 65-year-old woman died in a shark attack at Orient Beach on October 20.
The incident prompted the closure of Orient and Eastern beaches while authorities assessed safety risks.
The municipality announced on Saturday that Orient and Eastern beaches had reopened after safety assessments, while Nahoon Beach was closed after a separate shark sighting.
In January 2025, Nahoon Beach was also temporarily closed after a shark sighting. It was reopened after the municipality and the National Sea Rescue Institute conducted searches and reported that the area was clear.
Beachgoers are urged to respect the current closure and follow all instructions from municipal officials until further notice.
