Nation's longest high school football winning streak comes to an end - USA Today
Mother Nature made high school football fans on Long Island wait a few extra days for one of the area's biggest high school games in history.
When Massapequa (NY) and Garden City (NY) finally took the field at Hofstra's James M. Shuart Stadium, those in attendance witnessed the nation's longest winning streak come to a screeching halt.
Massapequa extended its now state-best 26-game winning streak with a 21-14win over Garden City, ending the Trojans national-best 68-game win streak.
The loss was the first for Garden City since they lost to Lindenhurst (NY) on November 30, 2019.
It took the full first quarter of both teams figuring each other out before Massapequa finally found the end zone. With 11:24 remaining in the half, Luke Garguilo capped off an 11-play, 55-yard drive that took 5:33 off of the clock to put the Chiefs up early in the quarter.
Garden City was limited to 12 yards of total offense in the first half and didn't register a first down. They quickly corrected that in the third quarter as Brayden Robertiello broke loose for a 60-yard touchdown run 43 seconds into the quarter to tie the game at seven.
An interception by Massapequa's Casey Gilchrist on Garden City's next drive led to the Chiefs’ next scoring opportunity. They capitalized three plays later as Justin Farrell bullied his way into the end zone with 4:36 remaining in the third.
Needing a touchdown, Garden City got its answer with 5:47 remaining. The Trojans marched 50 yards down the field in 2:28, capping the drive off with a 5-yard touchdown run from Robertiello to tie the game at 14.
It would be Ryan Chabus and Dylan Milio who would be the heroes for Massapequa. Chabus intercepted a pass with 1:50 remaining that set the Chiefs up deep in Garden City territory. Facing a third-and-long with 36 seconds remaining, Massapequa quarterback Luke Garguilo connected with a wide-open Milio for the 29-yard go-ahead touchdown.
Since Friday, the two longest high school football winning streaks in the country have been snapped.
The Sheridan (WY) Broncs had a 59- game winning streak going into last Friday's game with Natrona County (WY) but were shutout 38-0.
Two weeks ago, two of the other top 10 streaks entering the year were also snapped as Lincoln Christian (OK) lost to Shiloh Christian (AK) 41-14 ending their streak at 46 games while Star Valley's (WY) 33-game streak was ended by Sugar-Salem (ID).
Now the longest active winning streak in the country belongs to Carl Albert (OK).
The Titans escaped with a 17-16 win last week to up their current streak 58 games, tying Bixby's 11-man record for the state of Oklahoma. They'll look to break the record on Friday as they travel to Noble (OK).
