NDLEA dismantles Nigerian-Mexican meth cartel, arraigns kingpins
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel allegedly operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Council of Enugu State. Two alleged kingpins of the syndicate, 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, alias Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George, were arrested following months of intelligence gathering and surveillance by the agency. The suspects were allegedly operating the laboratory in collaboration with Rodriguez Villanueva, a suspected member of a Mexican drug cartel based in Mexico City. The NDLEA subsequently arraigned Christopher and Monday before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court, Enugu, on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, organising, managing and financing a drug trafficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals used in the production of methamphetamine. They pleaded not guilty to the charges, following which the court fixed October 21, 2026, for trial after the NDLEA applied for an accelerated hearing. Also named in the charge but currently at large are Uchenna, alias Uche; Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu; and Villanueva. According to the NDLEA, investigations by its Special Operations Unit (SOU) uncovered the activities of the syndicate after surveillance conducted between December 1 and 4, 2025, tracked Christopher’s movements across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states. The operation eventually led officers to a compound in Obeagu, where they discovered a clandestine laboratory allegedly capable of producing methamphetamine in commercial quantities. The agency said the laboratory was equipped with improvised reactors and distillation apparatus similar to facilities recently dismantled in Ogun, Oyo and Ebonyi states. A search of the premises led to the recovery of large quantities of precursor chemicals, including 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid, 290 litres each of toluene and acetone, 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide, 125 kilogrammes of N-phenylacetamide, 414 kilogrammes of lead acetate and 769.6 kilogrammes of tartaric acid, among other controlled substances.
The NDLEA said the materials recovered were consistent with a high-potency, P2P-based methamphetamine manufacturing operation.
A related search of George’s family residence also led to the recovery of eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11 kilogrammes of ephedrine. Reacting to the development, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd.), said the agency would continue to pursue all suspects connected with the cartel, including those still at large. Marwa commended the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and persistence, describing the dismantling of the Enugu laboratory as another indication that Nigeria would not be allowed to become a haven for transnational drug cartels. He said the agency’s intelligence-driven operations and international partnerships would continue to shut down loopholes exploited by local and foreign drug traffickers.
