The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 10th Battalion, is prepared to tackle Cyclone Murasu in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It has deployed 14 teams at various locations in the two States to coordinate with local officials and undertake emergency response and rescue operations.

“The NDRF has deployed three teams from its 4th Battalion, based at Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu, to tackle Cyclone Murasu. The remaining teams have been positioned at different locations from the 10th Battalion headquarters at Kondapavuluru in Krishna district,” said Commandant V.V.N. Prasanna Kumar.

Instructions have been issued to Deputy Commandants and Assistant Commandants to monitor alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and coordinate with local officials, he said.

The teams will strengthen rescue and relief operations in vulnerable areas. NDRF personnel have visited the districts, identified low-lying villages likely to be affected by the cyclone and drawn up plans for rescue and evacuation operations, Mr. Prasanna Kumar said.

“Trained NDRF teams will undertake water, rope and land-based search and rescue operations and provide medical assistance to rescued victims,” he told The Hindu on Monday.

Teams have been positioned in Prakasam, Nellore, Markapuram, Krishna, Guntur, Bapatla, West Godavari and Konaseema districts. Two teams have also been deployed in Mulugu and Khammam districts of Telangana, he said.

The NDRF had assisted personnel from the Revenue, Police, Fire Services and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) in clearing uprooted trees and erecting damaged electric poles during Cyclone Arnab.

Three NDRF teams continue to remain in cyclone-hit habitations to clear roads, restore power supply and undertake relief operations, Mr. Prasanna Kumar said.
