The girl, who was supported by State Education Minister Nara Lokesh to continue studying Class 10 at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Kondapuram village in Nellore district, has revealed her plans to choose a career in medicine.
In an interaction with The Hindu, Gudipati Sumanvi said, “I want to become a doctor. I know it’s a big goal for an average student like me. Presently, I am scoring around 400 out of 600 marks in school exams. But, I will work hard to secure more marks in the board exam.”
Her father Gudipati Nagabrahma Achari does wood works at a shop in Hyderabad. After her mother died last year, he wanted to keep her at home to help him in household works. He did not allow her to go back to school after Dasara holidays.
As Ms. Sumanvi was forced to stay at home, she posted a video on social media expressing her deep desire to resume her studies. The video went viral and reached the Minister.
Mr. Lokesh responded immediately to her post and directed the Nellore District Collector Himanshu Shukla to “personally step in, counsel her father and ensure she is allowed to pursue her studies without hindrance”.
A special team, comprising officials from the Revenue, Police, and Education Departments, brought the girl back to Kondapuram and facilitated her re-enrolment at the KGBV school. They also provided counselling to her father, explaining the importance of education to him.
Ms. Sumanvi expressed her gratitude to the Minister for the immediate response. The government has assured to provide full support and take necessary measures to ensure her aspiration to pursue higher education faces no obstacles, helping her achieve goals.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lokesh has commended the district administration and police officials for their swift intervention in ensuring the girl’s safe return to school. He emphasised that protecting every child’s right to education and securing their future is a top priority for the government.
