Nene Royal takes the stage at a welcome event in Phuket province on Sunday evening after returning from the United States, where she won America’s Got Talent 2026. (Photo: Achadthaya Chuenniran) Thai teenager Nene Royal’s victory on America’s Got Talent (AGT) 2026 generated more than 105 million social media engagements in Thailand, with positive sentiment growing as she progressed from a relatively unknown Phuket street performer to an international talent-show winner.

Nene Royal, the stage name of 16-year-old Praew Rattikan Amlouy, became the first Thai contestant to win the NBC talent show, triggering a surge of online attention and national pride.

According to Wisesight Thailand, its social-listening platform, Zocial Eye, recorded 86,084 messages related to Nene between July 6 and Sept 28, generating more than 105 million engagements.

The data suggests that her popularity did not stem from a single viral moment. Instead, online attention built steadily across three major stages of the competition.

During her audition period, from July 6 to 19, Nene generated 9,744 messages and 27.2 million engagements. Online conversation accelerated after she received the Golden Buzzer, with 18,295 messages and 21.9 million engagements recorded between Aug 24 and 30.

Attention reached its highest level during championship week, from Sept 21 to 27, when social media recorded 35,963 messages and 31.5 million engagements.

Her victory generated particularly intense activity. Between Sept 24 and 25 alone, more than 23,268 messages about her championship were recorded, attracting 21.7 million engagements.

Videos capturing the announcement of her victory were among the most widely shared content, while her performance with American nu-metal band Linkin Park before the winner was announced also drew strong engagement.

However, the biggest driver of engagement was not the championship itself but Nene’s personal story.

Content about her journey from performing as a street musician in Phuket generated 26.2 million engagements from 11,604 messages, the highest engagement among the five major themes identified by Wisesight.

Social media users widely shared videos of her busking at Phuket's Naka Market as well as stories about her family, particularly her father Narong, a woodcarver who supported his daughter's musical ambitions.

The findings indicate that Nene's appeal extended beyond her performances, with her background helping audiences connect her international success with a recognisable local story.

Her audition performance of "Zombie" by The Cranberries provided the first major catalyst, generating 9.4 million engagements.

Online discussion focused on the contrast between her youthful appearance and powerful rock performance, while the song also attracted audiences across generations, including older rock fans familiar with the original and younger viewers discovering the genre.

A second turning point came with her performance of grunge band Blackgarden's "Black Hole Sun", which earned a Golden Buzzer from judge Mel B and sent her directly to the final.

The performance generated 6,281 messages and 11.6 million engagements. Emotional footage of Nene crying and embracing her father after the result was also widely circulated.

As she moved closer to the final, Thai social media shifted from simply discussing her performances towards actively supporting her campaign.

Wisesight recorded 8,628 messages related to cheering and support, generating 12.6 million engagements. Another 5,033 messages, generating 6.61 million engagements, encouraged eligible Thai residents in the United States to vote because voting was restricted geographically.

Positive sentiment also strengthened as the competition progressed.

Of the 86,084 messages recorded during the study period, 42,609, or 49.5%, were classified as positive, generating more than 51.2 million engagements.

The proportion of positive conversation rose from 45.2% during the first audition week to 59.5% around the championship.

Approximately 68% of all positive messages were concentrated in just two periods — Golden Buzzer week and championship week — suggesting that major competition milestones accelerated favourable sentiment.

The language used online also increasingly connected Nene’s individual achievement with Thailand.

The term “Thai people” appeared in 9,340 positive messages, while references to the “country” appeared in 6,410. Discussions about Nene “making history” generated a further 7.5 million engagements.

Emotional reactions were particularly visible following the Golden Buzzer, when 561 messages referred to “tears” and 396 used expressions equivalent to “goosebumps”. Among posts containing the word “proud”, 87.9% were classified as positive.

The data shows how Nene’s online profile evolved during the competition: from curiosity about a young Phuket musician to viral attention surrounding her performances, and eventually to a broader narrative of Thai representation on the global stage.

Her AGT victory ultimately amplified a following that had been building throughout the competition, transforming a local musician’s story into one of Thailand’s biggest social media conversations of the period.
