Neuralink video shows trial patient saying 'I love you' using brain implant
Neuralink, Elon Musk’s brain-computer interface company, has shared a video on X showing one of its clinical trial participants narrating their personal experience with the world at large. In it, the patient who appears to be suffering from some type of speech impairment, is seen communicating with someone close—perhaps their partner—with his mind. The tagline is “a beautiful surprise” emphasizing on how magical the tech can be for those may need it.
The exact details of the participant including their condition has not been revealed. Instead, the focus is completely on telling the story of how Neuralink can help someone with speech impairment speak again by using a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant. The video is short, just 0.23 seconds, but that is enough to hype the potential of the tech behind it using emotions like love. To that effect, the protagonist in the video says “I love you” to the person who they care about, given how those are the first words that come to their mind when asked to speak. A computer in front of them does the actual talking, which is followed by awe and wonder. This is not the first time Neuralink has showcased its brain-computer magic. Elon Musk's brain-implant company has spent the last two years mostly showing people moving cursors. This March, we saw a British army veteran, Jon L. Noble, who was paralysed below the neck after a C4 spinal injury, successfully adapt Neuralink’s brain-computer interface technology. In his X post, he shared how his life has changed ever since his surgery and after implanting N1. According to Nobel, Neuralink has given him a new way to communicate with the physical world only through his mind. He can control the cursor of a MacBook and use it through his thoughts alone.
Like Jon L. Noble and the recent man in the video, there are many people to whom Neuralink has given a new way to communicate. But it is worth keeping in mind that the follow-up Neuralink post also includes a disclaimer stating that the brain implant devices are investigational and have not yet been approved by the FDA or other authorities.
In case you don’t know what Neuralink is, it is a neurotechnology company co-founded by Elon Musk.
