New Taylor Swift music is coming! 'Patient Zero' single announced

The pop superstar has announced a new single, "Patient Zero," set to drop on Friday, Sept. 25.

"I've been impatiently waiting to tell you that my brand new single 'Patient Zero' will be out on September 25 (!!!!!!!!!!!!) and it's available to pre-order now on my website for 24 hours," Swift revealed on Instagram.

The announcement came after visitors to TaylorSwift.com earlier on Sept. 22 were met with a burgundy curtain covered in glittering letters and a countdown clock set to expire at 2 p.m. ET. Swift's team had also previously added a third page to the letter announcing she had bought back the master recordings of her first six albums.

Swifties quickly began theorizing on social media about possibilities ranging from new merchandise or a music video to the beginning of another era. When the countdown expired, the website was updated to reveal collector's edition CDs for "Patient Zero" available for preorder. Three versions of the CDs were available: a standard edition, an acoustic version and a piano version. The CDs ship on or about Oct. 13.

It wasn't immediately clear if "Patient Zero" is the start of a new era for Swift or is considered more of an add-on to her 12th studio album "The Life of a Showgirl," which debuted in October 2025. But she appears to have hinted at the single's release in her music video for the "Life of a Showgirl" track "Opalite." The video, released in February, featured a sign that read, "Patient for the encore."

On Swift's website, listings for the "Patient Zero" CD featured the logo for her "The Life of a Showgirl" album. And her Instagram post announcing the song featured exactly 12 exclamation points, possibly underlining its connection to her 12th album.

Swift's new song will drop two days before the MTV Video Music Awards, where she will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors. She enters the ceremony with nine competitive nominations.

Prior to the big reveal, there was another change hiding in plain sight that hinted at the title of Swift's new song: She updated her social media bio to read, "And, baby, that's sh0w business f0r y0u. ❤️‍🔥" The three O's in the phrase were replaced with zeros.
