New York Giants acquire QB J.J. McCarthy from Minnesota Vikings - Giants Wire

The New York Giants are trading for Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick.

McCarthy, 23, was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft out of Michigan, where he led Jim Harbaugh's Wolverines to the National Championship that year.

McCarthy blew out his knee as a rookie in 2024 and missed the entire season. Last year, he started 10 games, won six, and threw 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

This past offseason, the Vikings signed Kyler Murray in free agency, pushing McCarthy to the bench behind Murray and Carson Wentz and making him expendable.

Giants head coach John Harbaugh said last week that the Giants would seek to add a quarterback or two after Jaxson Dart's season-ending knee injury. The Giants started Jameis Winston on Sunday in their 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans. Jake Haener was signed from the practice squad to back Winston up.

McCarthy's role with the Giants is still up in the air. He will obviously be on the 53-man roster and initially serve as Winston's primary backup. After that, the Giants could slip him in as the starter until Dart returns next season.
