New York Giants miss out as Joey Porter Jr. traded to Dallas Cowboys - Giants Wire
The New York Giants watched a cornerback they were rumored to have pursued land with a division rival, as the Pittsburgh Steelers traded Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys.
Dallas acquired the 26-year-old in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round selection. The deal ends a prolonged standoff in Pittsburgh, where Porter had not played this season amid a contract impasse in the final year of his rookie deal.
He appeared in 47 games over his first three seasons, recording 165 tackles, 31 passes defensed and three interceptions, and entered the year regarded as one of the league's better young press-coverage corners.
The Giants' secondary has been a recurring question through the early portion of the 2026 season, and a player with Porter's size and coverage profile would have fit a clear need. Instead, the Cowboys closed the deal, adding him to a defense that has been searching for cornerback help and is dealing with injuries in the secondary.
The destination makes the miss sharper. Porter is now a Cowboy, which means the Giants will see him twice a year inside the NFC East rather than once on a cross-conference schedule, assuming Jerry Jones ends up signing him to a long-term deal. Dallas can also use the franchise tag after the season if the two sides do not reach an agreement, giving the Cowboys a path to keep him beyond 2026.
For the Giants, the outcome is a missed opportunity on an available player and a reinforcement for a rival already on the schedule. Pittsburgh walks away with draft capital from a corner it could not extend. New York is left to address the same secondary questions it had before the deal was completed.
