Nine people were killed in a fatal road crash on Monday along the Ijebu-Ode/Ore axis of the Ijebu-Ode-Benin Expressway. The accident occurred at about 4:55pm around the Bethel area of the expressway and involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus, with registration number 14B-299DT, belonging to Delta Line, and a white Sino Truck commercial vehicle, with registration number AAB162XD, belonging to Bill Gas Solution Ltd. The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Monday. Odunsi-Oyewole said, “A total of nine persons, comprising three males and six females, were involved in the crash. Sadly, all nine persons were killed in the incident. “The crash occurred while it was raining, with the road pavement wet. The road itself was paved. Preliminary investigation identified speed violation (SPV) as the probable cause of the crash.See more Punch stories on Google.Add Punch on Google “The FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the report, arriving at 1658hrs. “The deceased victims were evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ijebu-Ode, while the vehicles involved were towed to the Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police MTD.” Meanwhile, the Corps Commander for the state, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise maximum caution while driving during rainfall. Ogunjobi also reminded motorists that speeding becomes even more dangerous on wet roads, as reduced tyre grip and visibility can make it difficult to control a vehicle or stop safely. The Federal Road Safety Corps extended its condolences to the families of the victims and urged all road users to make safety their priority at all times. On Friday, one person died while three others sustained serious injuries in a road crash involving a Lexus Jeep 350 along the Coastal Road, inward Eko Hotel, Lagos. The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, said the injured victims were reportedly rescued from the scene, while the circumstances surrounding the crash were yet to be disclosed.
