No govt info on ChatGPT, no Reels in uniform: MP Police's new social media rules
Madhya Pradesh Police personnel have been barred from uploading government, confidential or sensitive information to ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) platforms, and from creating or posting Instagram Reels while in uniform, under new and strict 24-point social media guidelines.
The guidelines prohibit police personnel from making or posting Reels while on duty or while wearing their police uniform, whether on or off duty. Violations could invite disciplinary action ranging from a show-cause notice to suspension under relevant police regulations and civil service conduct rules.
The new rules, issued on the basis of Union Home Ministry directions, lay down rules on social media use, media communication, handling of sensitive information and the use of AI platforms by police personnel.
Police officers posted in sensitive roles have also been directed not to disclose details about the nature of their duties, workplaces or related activities on social media.
The guidelines prescribe caution while sharing information about arrests, raids and criminal investigations. Police personnel have been advised to limit such posts to essential facts and not disclose details of investigative processes or future actions that could affect an ongoing probe.
They have also been directed to avoid social media posts that could suggest an accused has already been found guilty, keeping in mind the investigation and judicial process.
The restrictions also extend to personal social media accounts. Police personnel have been asked not to express views on government policies and schemes through their personal accounts or make political and religious statements on public platforms.
If a personal post appears to represent the government's official position, the department may issue a clarification, while serious violations could lead to disciplinary action.
The guidelines also prohibit police personnel from using department-issued CUG SIM cards to create social media accounts.
They further bar the use of government vehicles, offices, residences, uniforms and other official resources for personal branding or publicity. Officers have been cautioned against presenting departmental achievements as their own personal accomplishments.
The 24-point guidelines are aimed at keeping police duties and personal social media activity separate while regulating how personnel handle official information online.- EndsPublished By: Prateek ChakrabortyPublished On: Sep 22, 2026 10:20 IST
