No timeline, but Asia Cup trophies will be in India one day: Devajit Saikia
The two Asia Cup trophies won by India in the past year remain away from the country's cricket board, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is confident they will eventually find their way back to Mumbai.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stopped short of putting a date on their return, saying the board was not working with a specific timeline. His assurance came after India's men's and women's teams had declined to collect their respective trophies from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi.
"Asia Cup trophies, we hope they will come one day. I will not give you a timeline, but I can assure you that both the trophies will land up in this office of the BCCI at the Wankhede Stadium," Saikia told reporters after the board's 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai on Friday.
India's men's team lifted the T20 Asia Cup in Dubai last year after beating Pakistan in the final. The women's team followed that success by defeating Sri Lanka earlier this month to win the women's Asia Cup.
Neither title-winning side, however, received the trophy from Naqvi during the presentations. This was due to the heightened political tensions between the two nations. The issue gained additional attention because Naqvi is not only the head of the ACC but also Pakistan's interior minister.
The trophies have since remained a talking point, with the BCCI secretary now making it clear that the board expects both to eventually be placed at its Mumbai headquarters. RANCHI STILL ON TO HOST BGT TEST
Saikia also dismissed reports that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test scheduled in Ranchi could be moved to another venue.
The Test is scheduled for February 19-23, but reports had suggested that the Indian team management was not keen on playing the match in Ranchi.
"There are six months left. We will take a call after a few days. We haven't received any such requests as of now about change of venue of Ranchi Test," Saikia said.WOMEN TARGET ASIAN GAMES GOLD
Saikia also turned his attention to India's ongoing campaign at the Asian Games, backing the women's team to add another major title to its recent run of success.
The team began its campaign in Japan with a quarter-final win over Japan on Friday. That result came shortly after its Asia Cup triumph, giving India another opportunity to challenge for a major piece of silverware.
Saikia congratulated the players for their recent success in Dubai and said the BCCI hoped the team could complete its Asian Games campaign with a gold medal.
"We congratulated our women's team for their superb victory in Dubai last week. They have very nicely won the first match against Japan and we hope that they will win the gold medal in the Asian Games on 22nd of this month," he said.
