Nontando Nolutshungu lays out her vision for Cape Town: housing, transport, crime and ‘one city’

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) national chairperson and Cape Town mayoral candidate Nontando Nolutshungu says the city needs a different approach to housing, public transport, crime and basic services.

Speaking to CapeTalk’s Clarence Ford, Nolutshungu said her vision was to build “one city” rather than a Cape Town divided along economic and spatial lines.

“You know, if you look at South Africa, that is the most unequal society, particularly Cape Town,” she said.

“If you come to Cape Town, you see two worlds. You see the world of the rich, and you see the world of the poor.”

Nolutshungu, who said she was born and raised in Langa and had previously worked for the City of Cape Town, criticised what she described as a failure to prioritise resources where they were most needed.

She said township residents needed properly maintained infrastructure, housing, sewerage, drainage, and refuse collection, rather than work concentrated around elections.
