Ongoing US-South Korea military drills have left North Korea bristling. A defense ministry spokesperson called the exercises an "intolerable threat" to national security.

The ministry issued a statement on Friday through the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

The drills, called Freedom Flag, began on Monday in South Korea. They involve fighter jets.

The North Korean spokesperson also said, "Our armed forces will thoroughly deter threats with force."

An NHK crew filmed the border area on Friday from the South Korean city of Paju. What appears to be self-propelled howitzers can be seen on the North's side. The guns were pointed toward the South, and soldiers were seen training.

Tensions have recently risen between the two Koreas. North Korea is fortifying its side of the border.
