Number of Companies Publishing Carbon Emissions Data Hits Record in Brazil - 15/09/2026 - Business - Folha de S.Paulo

A record number of companies disclosed carbon emissions information to the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program (PBGHG), one of the largest national databases on greenhouse gases in the corporate world. In this cycle, 757 organizations submitted inventories for 2025, up 12% from 670 in the previous period. The data are available on the Public Emissions Registry platform, maintained by the FGV (Getulio Vargas Foundation).

Combined, the 757 companies emitted 213 million tons of CO₂e under Scope 1 (direct emissions), 8.1 million under Scope 2 (energy) and 1.18 billion under Scope 3 (value chains). By comparison, deforestation accounted for 805 million tons of CO₂e in 2022, according to the National Inventory.

Guilherme Lefevre, manager of the PBGHG, attributes the growth to the importance of the climate agenda and the engagement of sectors that previously reported little, such as agribusiness. "The number of rural businesses and farms committed to preparing inventories has been growing significantly; it was something that used to be more restricted to the business and corporate world," he says. Even so, the inventories cover just 0.8% of direct emissions from the agricultural sector, compared with 75% of industrial processes.

A survey of 512 companies identifies cost and financial feasibility as the main barriers to reducing emissions. In May, the CVM (Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission) suspended the mandatory sustainability reporting requirements scheduled for 2027.
