October could bring a turbulent turn in the weather, with the Bay of Bengal primed for a possible cyclone even as the southwest monsoon prepares to pull out of Bangladesh in the month’s first half.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Thursday said two to three low-pressure systems may form over the Bay, with one potentially developing into a depression or cyclone.

Rainfall is expected to stay below normal this month, although three to four days of thunderstorms are possible in parts of the country.

Day and night temperatures may gradually fall in the second half of October, but are likely to remain above normal for the month as a whole.

The country’s major rivers are expected to maintain normal flows. However, heavy rain could trigger rapid but temporary rises in water levels in parts of northern, northeastern and southeastern Bangladesh.
