A former Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, has described the death of veteran Nigerian actor and thespian, Oludotun Jacobs, known as Olu Jacobs, as an “irreparable loss” to Nigeria and the African entertainment industry. Olu Jacobs died on Wednesday, at the age of 84. In a condolence message issued on Wednesday, Amosun mourned the celebrated actor, extending his sympathy to his family, friends, colleagues and the countless admirers who followed his remarkable career across the stage, television and cinema. The former governor said the passing of the veteran actor marked the end of an era for a man whose voice, presence and extraordinary command of his craft left an enduring impression on generations of Nigerians. Amosun said, “The passing of Olu Jacobs is a great loss to Nigeria and the African entertainment industry.” He noted that Jacobs would be remembered not only as an accomplished actor but also as one of the figures who helped shape and advance Nigeria’s film and entertainment industry. Over the course of his career, Jacobs received numerous honours in recognition of his contribution to the arts. Among them were the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007, the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2013 and the MAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Amosun also paid tribute to Jacobs’ connection to Ogun State and Egbaland, saying his achievements brought honour and distinction to the state and his ancestral home. He stated, “He will be greatly missed for bringing honour and distinction to Ogun State and his ancestral home, Egbaland.” The former governor urged the late actor’s widow, Joke Silva, their children, members of the Nigerian theatre and film community, as well as his admirers across the country and beyond, to take comfort in the life he lived and the legacy he left behind.
