OM postponed: Dhanush avoids Jailer 2 clash, skips Diwali for Suriya's Scene
Actor Dhanush’s upcoming film OM has been postponed from its scheduled October 16, 2026 release date. The National Award-winning actor announced the decision, explaining that the film’s release would clash with Rajinikanth’s upcoming project, which is set to arrive in theatres on October 15.
Announcing the postponement, Dhanush said the decision was taken out of respect for Rajinikanth, whom he described as a superstar he and many others have “admired and worshipped” over the years.
“In times like these, shifting the release of a film comes with its own set of challenges,” Dhanush wrote.
Explaining the decision, he added, “Our superstar, Rajinikanth sir, the man whom we all have admired and worshipped over the years, has his film arriving on October 15, just a day before ours. Out of immense respect for him, we have decided to postpone the release of our film, OM, to a later date.”
Dhanush also confirmed that OM will not release during the Diwali window this year. Suriya’s upcoming film has already been announced for the festival release date, and Dhanush said the team did not want to overlap with a date that had been announced first.
“At the same time, we will not be arriving for Diwali this year either, as Suriya sir's film has already been announced for the same date. In all fairness, they announced their date first, and we strongly believe that big films should have a mutual understanding and respect each other's decisions, keeping the larger welfare of the cinema and industry in mind,” he wrote.
Dhanush concluded by saying that the new release date for OM will be announced soon.
The postponement comes soon after Dhanush’s National Awards recognition. The actor recently won the Best Actor (Special Mention) award, while OM co-star Mammootty was also among the National Award winners this year. Director Rajkumar Periasamy and editor R Kalaivanan were also recognised.
In July, Mammootty, Dhanush, Periasamy and Kalaivanan celebrated their National Award wins on the sets of OM.
OM: Chapter 1 (Udhiram - The Blood Wood) is an upcoming Tamil action thriller starring Dhanush, Mammootty, Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela. Directed by Rajkumar, the film was originally scheduled for a worldwide release on October 16. Inspired by real-life events, the film’s full narrative details have been kept under wraps. It is backed by Wunderbar Films and R Take Studios, with music composed by Sai Abhyankkar.
Dhanush was last seen in Kara this year and will next be seen in Thamizh Murugan, apart from OM.
