Ombudsman Finds Alleged Illegal Levies at Cibinong Prison - Tempo.co English

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia found that officials at the Cibinong Class IIA Penitentiary in West Java have charged inmates illegally. Ombudsman member Syafrida Rachmawati Hasan said inmates were allegedly charged Rp150,000 per week.

"We found that there are still illegal charges against inmates amounting to Rp150,000 per week in one block in the prison area," said Syafrida during a meeting with the Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) at the Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

Syafrida explained that the findings came from Ombudsman officers who interviewed inmates’ families during visits on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. On that day, Ombudsman officials were prohibited from entering the inmate block, so they could only examine the outer area.

In last week's sudden inspection, the Ombudsman discovered several unusual facilities within the prison, including over ten luxury houses equipped with full amenities. During a visit to one of the houses, Ombudsman members discovered inmates inside a room.

The Directorate General of Corrections at the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, Mashudi, said their party has conducted an internal investigation regarding the issues at Cibinong Prison. In a meeting with the DPR Commission XIII on Monday, September 28, 2026, Mashudi mentioned that the government-formed joint investigative team examined 90 individuals, including 55 inmates and 35 staff members.

The Inspectorate General of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections has suspended the Head of Cibinong Class IIA Penitentiary, Wisnu Hani Putranto, and four other structural officials for examination. The four officials included the Head of the Security Unit of the Correctional Institution, the Head of the Guidance Section for Prisoners and Trainees, the Head of the Security and Order Section, and the Head of General Affairs.
