One Degree Is Not Enough! Checking the Direction of the Labor Market in the AI Era: How New Graduates Must Adapt  Thairath English

On the day AI changes the work structure, the key question in hiring no longer stops at "What did you study?"

The current labor market reflects that educational qualifications are only an initial gateway. What leads employers to choose candidates are actual work skills and the ability to apply modern tools to enhance their output.

Starting a career may no longer be easy for the new generation as the global labor market faces a turning point. Singapore's president raised this issue at the IMF-World Bank 2026 meeting in Bangkok, noting that demand for entry-level jobs is clearly declining.

Although AI does not immediately replace all jobs, it gradually changes job content piece by piece. The IMF estimates about 40% of jobs worldwide will be affected, making previous work skill standards insufficient.

This trend is evident in developed countries, where 1 in 10 job postings now require at least one new skill. Particularly in IT fields, more than half of all job ads specify new skill requirements as selection criteria.

Although a degree remains an important educational foundation, relying solely on academic qualifications may no longer suffice to enter today's work world.

Duangporn Prom-on, an executive at Jobsdb by SEEK Thailand, pointed out that the start of actually getting a job is understanding what employers seek and adapting to market demands accordingly.

The important thing is to embrace and see AI technology as a tool to open new opportunities, which helps the younger generation plan self-development precisely, as modern organizations seek real work results and adaptability through three main factors.

Organizations value individuals who understand digital technology alongside analytical thinking skills; thus, developing expertise aligned with career goals is better than being generally knowledgeable without clarity.

What differentiates a resume is evidence of problem-solving, which can be demonstrated through education, internships, projects, or activities showing responsibility.

Moving beyond just commanding AI, one must supervise the output by analyzing, verifying accuracy, and using human judgment to determine final work quality.

The question "How can a recent graduate have experience?" can be answered by changing resume writing from listing long skill names to presenting tangible achievements.

Simply stating AI skills is powerless without explaining how the tool solved a problem and delivered concrete results. Work from academic projects or personal case trials can serve as strong proof of job readiness.

The shortcut to landing the first job is not chasing every new technology but knowing what the market demands and using tools precisely to turn knowledge into measurable results.
