The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to sell onions at a subsidised price of ₹35 a kg at all the Rythu Bazars in Vijayawada as part of the measures to contain the impact of rising prices, it said in a press release.
Agriculture Minister K. Atchannaidu and Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar said each family would be eligible to buy up to 2 kg of onions a month from Wednesday (September 30, 2026), on producing an Aadhaar card or ration card.
The Ministers said the government was regularly reviewing market conditions and taking measures to check the rising prices of essential commodities.
The programme would be extended to all the Rythu Bazars across the State based on the response in Vijayawada, they said.
The subsidised sale of onions was among the measures announced by the group of Ministers on September 25, along with super-fine rice at ₹50 a kg at Rythu Bazars. Onions have no minimum support price, so the State would buy them through its price stabilisation fund and sell them in the market, Mr. Atchannaidu had said then. The government also plans to expand onion cultivation to non-traditional areas and reduce the State’s dependence on supplies from Maharashtra.
