‘ONS HET HULLE GEMOER’ - DA declares victory in Cape Town elections - IOL
THE Democratic Alliance (DA) has declared victory in Cape Town, with City of Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis predicting a 58% share of the vote.
Despite just 45% of the vote in the Western Cape and just 25% of the ballots verified and counted by 12pm on Thursday, 5 November 2026, the DA made the call, with 52.7% of the vote.
Parties need just 50 plus one percent of the vote to control a municipality outright.
Before Hill-Lewis addressed the party’s supporters outside the IEC results centre in Century City at around lunchtime, DA councillor Angus McKenzie hyped up the crowd.
He crowed: “Ons het hulle gemoer”, referring to opposition parties in the city.
Hill-Lewis then took the stage, saying: “I've got an important announcement to make.”
“Based on our own collection of all the data from all of the voting stations where you all worked late into last night, we can now project that our results in the City of Cape Town will be around 58% of the vote.”
