OpenAI calls for global US-led coalition on AI safety - Semafor
OpenAI on Monday called for the US to lead an international coalition to coordinate global AI standards, as discussion of the technology’s risk and promise looms over this week’s UN General Assembly.
The call comes as Washington pursues tentative outreach with China on coordinating AI developments, including through a possible deconfliction hotline with Beijing, though a similar mechanism notably failed during a 2001 security crisis. “The offer is perhaps unintentionally symbolic of the countries’ stasis,” Semafor’s China columnist argued, “limited in scope and ambition even as they grapple with huge geopolitical and societal instability.”
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, who has vested interests in AI, has been reluctant to shape domestic AI safety standards, aligning publicly with some industry bulls.
