The police department has drafted 2,202 policemen for election duty in the five urban local bodies in Tirupati district, which are going to polls on Sunday.
A lion’s share of the deployment goes towards the Tirupati Municipal Corporation, while the remaining is apportioned to Puttur, Naidupeta, Sullurpeta and Venkatagiri municipal towns.
The figure includes an Additional Superintendent of Police, eight Deputy Superintendents, 26 Circle Inspectors and 98 Sub-Inspectors.
“A Rapid Response Team will be in the waiting to tackle emergency situations in violence-prone and sensitive polling stations”, said the Superintendent of Police L. Subbarayudu, who appealed to the public to cast their vote without any fear.
Those trying to thwart the election process or disrupt peace in the demarcated areas around the polling stations would face legal action, he warned.
