Pakistan Could Get New Trade Routes to Turkey and Europe - ProPakistani
Pakistan and Qatar have discussed exploring new regional trade routes that could connect Pakistan with Turkey and European markets through the Middle East and Central Asia, potentially creating new opportunities for transit and bilateral trade.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs Ahmad bin Mohammad Al Sayed on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Summit. The two sides also discussed regional developments, connectivity and economic cooperation.
Jam Kamal appreciated Qatar’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the region, while the Qatari minister acknowledged Pakistan’s contribution to regional peace.
Both sides explored how the Belt and Road Initiative and stronger regional connectivity could support new trade routes through the Middle East and Central Asia, including potential links from Pakistan and Qatar toward Turkey and onward to Europe.
The two ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral trade and exploring new areas of economic cooperation.
Separately, Jam Kamal met Sri Lanka’s Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe to discuss stronger trade and economic ties, including greater use of Pakistan’s Free Trade Agreement with Sri Lanka. They also discussed connectivity, infrastructure, food security, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
Sri Lanka thanked Pakistan for supporting improved market access for its kinnow exports, while Pakistan appreciated Sri Lanka’s cooperation regarding Pakistani access to markets for pineapples, avocados and king coconut.
Jam Kamal also met Bangladesh’s Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, with both sides agreeing to strengthen economic cooperation and explore opportunities to diversify bilateral trade. Rice exports were highlighted as an example, while textiles were identified as another area with potential.
The commerce minister also met the International Organization for Mediation Secretary-General Teresa Chan. The two sides discussed the organization’s role in resolving disputes involving governments and private organizations and Pakistan’s role as a founding and contracting member.
