Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain went down with a non-contact ankle injury late in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers. He was ruled out in the third quarter.

Surtain was down on the field for a few moments before being helped off by two people, walking slowly into the locker room. Surtain was replaced on defense by cornerback Jahdae Barron, the team's first-round pick in last year's NFL draft. Barron played across from Riley Moss with Ja'Quan McMillian continuing to play in the slot.

Surtain had totaled four tackles in the first half before leaving the game. View the play in which the injury appeared to occur below.

After injuring his ankle against the 49ers, Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain is considered "week-to-week," according to a report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. One source told Fowler the team is bracing for Surtain to miss "about two weeks."

Denver received good news on Pat Surtain's sprained ankle after today's MRI, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Surtain "avoided worst-case scenario," and his absence is "expected to be short-term," according to Rapoport. Overall, that's great news. Surtain could still miss time, but it's good to hear that it's not a more serious injury.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported this morning that Pat Surtain is expected to miss time, but it's not believed to be season-ending. "You hope it is just a couple weeks, maybe it ends up in an IR stint, but not expected to be season-ending," Rapoport said. If Surtain is placed on injured reserve, he would have to sit out at least four games.

Pat Surtain is "believed to have avoided a long-term injury," according to The Ringer's Tom Pelissero. There's still more testing to come, but Surtain's Achilles is intact, and the early signs indicate he avoided a worst-case scenario.

Mike Klis of 9News noted that there won't be official confirmation until after Monday's MRI, and Surtain may "miss some time," but the team hopes to have PS2 back this season.

After an eventual 24-14 loss, Broncos coach Sean Payton said he didn't have any updates to provide on the team's injuries because he had not yet heard anything. "Nothing right now," Payton said. "I just asked the same question coming off the field to Beau [Lowery], so [nothing yet]."

Broncos cornerbacks Pat Surtain (ankle) and Riley Moss (ribs), who were both originally listed as questionable to return, have been announced as ruled out for the rest of today's game.

The play in which Surtain went down is above. Here's video of him slowing walking off the field with help:

Riley Moss and Jahdae Barron are the two outside cornerbacks with Ja'Quan McMillian playing in the slot. Behind them on Denver's depth chart, the Broncos also have Kris Abrams-Draine. With PS2 sidelined, the team is down to four healthy cornerbacks on the active roster. Update: Moss (ribs) was announced as questionable to return after halftime, so Denver now has Barron and Abrams-Draine starting at the two outside cornerback spots.

This story will be updated when we learn more about Surtain's injury.
