The South African Alcohol Policy Alliance (SAAPA) has backed calls for a pause on issuing new liquor licences. It follows separate mass shootings in Wedela, Gauteng, and Lwandle in the Western Cape at the weekend, which claimed 28 lives.

Speaking to CapeTalk/702, SAAPA campaign director Nomcebo Dlamini told Africa Melane that authorities currently do not have a clear enough picture of how many alcohol outlets are operating in communities. "It seems like we don't have a handle on the establishments that we have in our communities anymore, and perhaps that's the reason why we end up having so many."
