Re: "Deep South needs trust", (Editorial, Sept 4).

Your editorial rightly mentioned that the southern conflict is extremely complex. Thailand needs a capable, professional veteran who has already dealt successfully with problems in the South. Bring in the right veterans who are from the South and understand Muslim culture and traditions, local dialects and are able to analyse the root causes of attacks and murders, rather than people from Bangkok who have little understanding of southern problems and are living in an ivory tower, flying planes and playing golf. It would also be an excellent idea to bring in people who share the same faith as local people.

The editorial wonders why the government still could not stop the attack on a local MP even though intelligence had been received. When members of our own security personnel are involved in attacks, even a child knows such attacks cannot easily be stopped.

The editorial rightly mentioned that one of the major causes of anger among local southerners is the government's failure to bring army commanders involved in the Tak Bai and mosque incidents to court to face justice.
