Pennsylvania high school football coach hit with two-game suspension - USA Today
Schuylkill Haven (PA) has had its issues on the field early on in the season as the Hurricanes have dropped their first three games of the new year.
Things went from bad to worse on Wednesday, Sept. 16, as head coach Mike Farr was handed a two-game suspension.
T102 Sports Now reported that Farr will serve a two-game suspension for "violating the program's Code of Conduct."
With Farr out, John Carestia Jr. will serve as the program's interim coach for the stretch.
“The District takes its responsibility to provide students with a safe, respectful and positive environment seriously, and holds its coaches responsible for any actions that fall short of these standards," Schuylkill Haven Superintendent Dr. Shawn Fitzpatrick said in a statement according to the report. "The District took prompt action in response to allegations made.”
Farr's suspension comes following actions that happened during the Hurricanes' 50-20 loss to Blue Mountain (PA) last Friday night.
“There were several situations that occurred on Friday that I should have handled differently,” Farr is quoted as saying in the report. “As a head coach I own responsibility for not only my actions, but the actions of the entire program. I support the administration’s decision to suspend me for two games.”
Farr, a Schuylkill Haven grad, played for the Hurricanes in the 1980's and was the quarterback for the Hurricanes team that won the 1982 Eastern Conference Class C championship.
After his playing days were done, Farr returned to the program and served as an assistant under long-time coach John Davis and remain on staff until Davis' death in 2005. Farr took over as head coach ahead of the 2005 season and has run the program since. compiling a record of 153-98.
Farr will miss Schuylkill Haven's road game at Mahanoy Area (PA) next week and another road game at Nativity BVM (PA) before returning on Oct. 2 for the Hurricanes home game against Williams Valley (PA).
