Pet dog hops onto school bus, owner races after him in her pajamas

A US woman had been given one very clear instruction by her teenage daughter on the first day of school: stay inside and stay away from the bus stop. But an overly enthusiastic golden retriever had other plans.

According to a report by TODAY, Ashley Miller, 42, was told by her daughter Madelyn, a 10th grader in Farmington, New York, that having her mother show up at the bus stop would be embarrassing.

So, when the children were getting ready to leave around 7am, Miller stayed inside while her husband, Jason, secretly filmed their children, including seventh grader Parker, as they waited for the school bus.

Then their one-year-old golden retriever, Finley, spotted the approaching bus.

As the bus arrived near their cul-de-sac, Miller opened the front door. Finley, who weighed about 83 pounds, immediately darted past her and sprinted towards the vehicle. Before Miller could stop him, the dog had made his way onto the school bus.

Finley appeared completely thrilled by the unexpected adventure. With a bus full of children around him, he seemed more interested in meeting new people and collecting attention than in getting back home.

Miller eventually boarded the bus herself and got down on her knees in the aisle, trying to pull the excited dog back towards the exit. The task was made harder by the fact that Finley was not wearing his collar. She managed to grab a handful of his fur and eventually pulled him back down the steps.

All the while, Miller had no idea that her husband was secretly recording the entire episode.

Once Finley was back outside, Miller returned to the house, only to find her husband struggling to contain his laughter. Her son found the whole situation hilarious, while Madelyn was mortified by the unexpected appearance of her mother - and the dog - on the school bus.

Even the bus driver seemed to embrace the chaos. He had been greeting students through the bus's outdoor intercom and, when Finley appeared, gave the golden retriever his own cheerful greeting.

Finley was eventually escorted off the bus, but his school-bus adventure was far from over. The moment he was back outside, he took off running through a neighbour's front yard and Miller's garden, burning off his excitement with what she described as an extended bout of “zoomies”.

Reflecting on the chaotic start to the school year, Miller told TODAY that she felt as though she had lost five years of her life on the first day of school and was still recovering from the ordeal.
