PHC upholds 14-year sentence in lecturer murder case

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has dismissed an appeal filed by Sher Mohammad, convicted in the murder case of Islamia College Peshawar lecturer Bashir Ahmad, and upheld the 14-year imprisonment awarded to him by the trial court. A two-member bench comprising Justice Waqar Ahmad and Justice Farah Jamshed announced the verdict after hearing the appeal against the judgment of the Peshawar Sessions Court. During the proceedings, Additional Advocate General Alam Khan Adinzai told the court that Sher Mohammad had opened fire on Bashir Ahmad at Islamia College Peshawar on February 19, 2023. The accused was performing duties as a security guard at the college when the incident occurred. The government lawyer argued that substantial evidence was available against the accused and that the CCTV footage clearly showed that he had not fired in self-defence but had deliberately attacked the lecturer. The AAG maintained that the accused, being a security guard, had no justification for opening fire on the lecturer. He said the evidence on record could not be ignored and that the accused was not entitled to any concession.
