A photo exhibition, presentation of awards and cultural programmes marked the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations at Acharya Nagarjuna University. The events were jointly organised by the university and Photography Academy of India.
Former Minister Dokka Manikya Vara Prasada Rao, who attended the programme as the chief guest, said Mahatma Gandhi had always identified himself with farmers, rural communities and commoners and brought them into the freedom movement. He highlighted Gandhi’s struggle in South Africa, efforts for equality and contribution to women’s empowerment. Referring to Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, he said their relationship should not be viewed merely through their differences, as both worked in their own ways for the uplift of oppressed sections.
ANU Rector Prof. R. Sivarama Prasad said Gandhi’s principles of non-violence, discipline and public service remained relevant and urged government employees to prioritise people’s welfare.
T. Srinivasa Reddy, Guest Faculty (Photography), ANU and founder chairman of Photography Academy of India (PAI) said that organising such events inspire the photographers.
Professor M. Suresh Kumar, Principal of the Arts, Commerce and Law College, coordinated the programme. Registrar Professor G. Simhachalam and other guests spoke on Gandhi’s philosophy.
A photo exhibition showcasing rare photographs of Gandhi’s life was organised. About 40 photographers from across India received awards for participating in the Independence Day photography competition conducted by the Photography Academy of India.
The recipients included two photojournalists from The Hindu— G.N. Rao from Vijayawada and Kommuri Srinivasa Rao from Ongole.
