Firefighters extinguish a fire inside a plastic recycliing warehouse in Durban on Friday.

The eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services reported that a plastic recycling company warehouse caught alight in Durban on Friday. 

The eThekwini Municipality stated that the fire began at 6:30 am on Cypress Drive in Glen Anil, north of Durban. The municipality reported that on arrival, firefighters encountered a fierce blaze that had engulfed a large section of the facility. Firefighters also noted that the roof had partially collapsed. 

Bruce de Gier, eThekwini Fire Directorate Divisional Commander in the North Region said emergency personnel immediately launched an intensive firefighting operation, working tirelessly to bring the inferno under control.

Firefighters battled a fire at a warehouse in Durban’s Glen Anil Industrial area on Friday. The fire was eventually contained and extinguished.

Despite the fire's intensity, de Gier said crew members successfully contained approximately 75 percent of the blaze, limiting structural damage to about 25 percent of the warehouse.

De Gier said firefighters used "two attack lines" and utilised three fire engines and a water tanker to bring the fire under control in 30 minutes. 

"Firefighters' swift intervention prevented the facility's destruction, safeguarded neighbouring businesses, and enabled the company to maintain partial operations while recovery efforts proceeded," he said. 

The municipality said smoke damaged some goods stored within the premises. The municipality stated that no injuries or fatalities were reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

“The fire safety investigation team has commenced assessments to determine the origin and cause of the incident,” the municipality stated.

The municipality urges residents, companies, and business owners to ensure robust fire safety measures are implemented at all times to protect lives and property.
