As meeting people through online platforms and dating apps continues to be a primary way to build connections, safety experts are reiterating a vital warning: exercising caution before taking an online relationship into the real world is essential.

While connecting online offers convenience and access to a wider community, South African Police Service (SAPS) emphasises that users must guard their personal details carefully.

“Avoid sharing sensitive or unnecessary personal information early on, as this data can be misused,”said SAPS. 

“Furthermore, red flags should never be ignored—no one should allow an online contact to pressure or lure them into isolated, unfamiliar, or uncomfortable settings,” SAPS added.

SAPS urges anyone taking the leap from digital interactions to real-life meetups to prioritise their personal well-being above all else. When in doubt, the safest option is always to cancel the meeting.
