The Enugu State Police Command has identified the woman allegedly killed by her boyfriend, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, as 27-year-old Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu. The command said Ugwu was a graduate of Medical Laboratory Science from the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, and had recently completed her National Youth Service Corps programme. The police disclosed this in an update on the case on Friday. According to the statement, “Investigation has established the identity of the deceased as Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu, aged 27, a graduate of Medical Laboratory Science from the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), who recently concluded her NYSC.” The command also said the deceased’s family had been identified and interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.See more Punch stories on Google.Add Punch on Google “Her parents and siblings have also been identified and interviewed by the Commissioner of Police, alongside the suspect,” the statement added. The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, also reassured the family that justice would be served in the case. “The CP has reassured the family that justice will be served in the case,” the command said. The 30-year-old suspect was arrested by the police following the alleged killing of Ugwu at his residence in the Olympic Layout area of Enugu. The police had earlier said preliminary investigation showed that Emmanuel allegedly killed his girlfriend following an argument over allegations concerning the source of a Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection. The command had also alleged that the suspect struck Ugwu on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death, before wrapping her remains in nylon and locking them inside the toilet of his apartment. The decomposing body was reportedly discovered after the offensive odour attracted neighbours, who forced the door open and apprehended the suspect before the arrival of the police. The remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the suspect was rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by police operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division. In the latest update, the command urged members of the public, particularly women, to exercise caution in their relationships and ensure that trusted persons know their whereabouts. “Once again, be careful about who you go out with. Ladies, especially, let someone you trust know your whereabouts,” the statement said. The police added, “Do not assume that because you know someone, you are necessarily safe with them. People can change.” The command further urged members of the public to remain cautious, saying, “Above all, stay vigilant, trust your instincts, and do all you can to avoid getting involved with the wrong person.” Fawzi Kehinde Fawzi is a journalist and subeditor covering a wide range of beats including politics, metro, and international news, among others.
