A 37-year-old man was shot in bushland near Owen Place in the Perth suburb of Hamilton Hill on Sunday morning. 

Police are searching for two male suspects and say they don't believe the shooting is related to organised motorcycle gangs or illegal tobacco.

The victim was shot in the stomach and remains in a serious but stable condition after surgery. 

WA Police are searching for two male suspects who are believed to be involved in the "targeted" shooting of a 37-year-old man on Sunday morning. 

Police said that at 4:35am two men, dressed in black clothing and wearing masks, approached and shot the man in bushland near Owen Place in Hamilton Hill, about 23 kilometres south-west of Perth CBD.

St John WA provided emergency first aid to the man, who was found in the street with a gunshot wound to his stomach, according to police. 

He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where his condition remains serious but stable.

Two suspects are still on the run, but police believe the incident was isolated, with no current concern for public safety. 

Detective Brian Connelly, from the Serious and Organised Crime Division, said there was no information to suggest the shooting was related to organised motorcycle gangs or illegal tobacco.

"We are confident in saying it is a targeted attack at one individual and we're treating it as such," he told reporters.

Detective Connelly said the attack ended very quickly.

"And the person who shot the victim knew the victim."

He confirmed a member of the public called for help and assisted the victim until an ambulance arrived.

The victim's gunshot wound had been operated on, he said. 

Earlier on Sunday, police urged members of the public to stay away from the area. 

In a statement, police said significant resources had been deployed to the area and they were "conducting a thorough search".

Forensic officers are examining a related scene on Karda Way, around 200 metres north of Owen Place.

Witnesses reported seeing the victim stumble onto Owen Place clutching his stomach.

Local woman India Forbes said she heard males yelling, followed by a gunshot early this morning.

"Just some yelling, a bit of commotion and a loud bang," she told the ABC. 

"I wasn't sure if I was dreaming or it was actually happening.

"It's terrifying. I feel for the families living close by and the families involved, it's really upsetting."

Anyone who sees the two males or notices suspicious behaviour is urged not to approach them, but to call police via Triple Zero (000) immediately.
