Police swoop on Senzo Mchunu’s KZN home, seize cellphone - IOL

Police have seized a cellphone from suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu after executing a Johannesburg High Court search and seizure warrant at his family home in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, police officials served the warrant on Mchunu at his private family residence in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.

The warrant authorised the seizure of cellular phones linked to specific IMEI numbers identified in the court document.

Mchunu’s spokesperson Sithembiso Mshengu said the minister handed over the handset to the police in the presence of his attorney and in compliance with the court’s directive.

“As a law-abiding citizen and in the presence of his attorney, Minister Mchunu handed over the handset in line with the directive of the court,” the statement said.

The statement did not provide details about the investigation that prompted the warrant or explain what information police are seeking from the cellphone.

According to Mchunu’s statement, Monday’s seizure was the second time police had taken communication devices from the minister.

It claimed that the first set of devices had not yet been returned when the latest seizure took place.

“Minister Mchunu will address these developments and many other matters that evolve around his name in the coming weeks,” the statement said.

Mchunu was suspended in July 2025 after allegations of links to organised crime groups were made against him.
