President Xi Jinping says China-US ties at another historical juncture

Chinese President Xi Jinping said China-US relations have come to another historical juncture in remarks at a welcome banquet held by US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump at the White House in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan attended the event.Β
In a toast after the banquet began, Xi extended sincere greetings and best wishes for the Mid-Autumn Festival to Americans from all sectors of society who care about and support the further growth of the bilateral ties.
Xi recalled Trump's successful visit to China in May this year and noted that in less than six months the Chinese and American presidents have exchanged state visits, making history in the countries' bilateral engagement.Β
He noted that common understandings on many issues have been reached during his visit to the US, adding new substance to the constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability, and providing new strategic guidance for China-US relations.
Xi said that over 200 years ago, soon after its independence, the United States turned its eyes to China. The two countries started trading with each other, exchanging goods to meet each other's needs and drawing on the complementary strengths of each other, he added.Β
A little over 80 years ago, Xi said, the Chinese and American people stood shoulder to shoulder in the fight against Japanese militarist aggressors. He said such a friendship forged in blood and fire will live on through the generations.
Just over 50 years ago, Ping-Pong Diplomacy between China and the United States reopened the door to bilateral exchanges that had been closed for years, Xi said. With the political wisdom embodied in "a small ball moving the globe," the older generation of Chinese and American statesmen set in motion the historic process of normalizing relations between the two countries, he added.Β
Xi said the story of an American named Ronald Sakolsky, who more than 20 years ago gave financial support to Chinese desert control worker Yin Yuzhen for her tree-planting effort, continues to touch the hearts of many Chinese people and stands as a shining example of the friendly exchanges between the two peoples.
Exchanges have helped promote heart-to-heart communication between the two peoples and cemented public support for Sino-US friendship and cooperation, the Chinese president added.Β
Xi also said Trump's pledge to make America great again and China's commitment to achieving great national rejuvenation are both ambitious goals that can be mutually reinforcing.
He added that China and the United States should take on the responsibilities of major countries, meet the expectations of their peoples, keep pace with the trend of the times and explore a new approach for major countries to get along with each other.
Like a river that never stops flowing, history never stands still, Xi said, adding that the friendship between the two peoples is a worthy cause that holds great promise.
The two sides should join hands and move forward side by side, nurture the beautiful flowers of China-US friendship, and write a new chapter in their friendly relations, he added.
The welcome banquet was held in a warm and cordial atmosphere, featuring performances by American artists. The two presidents and their wives also posed for a photo together and met with guests attending the banquet.
