Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday (September 22) visited the township being built at Elston Estate in Kalpetta to rehabilitate the survivors of the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides and reviewed the progress of the construction work. She was accompanied by Ministers A.P. Anilkumar and P.C. Vishnunadh and other elected representatives.
Earlier in the day, the township chief operating officer informed the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting held at Kalpetta and attended by Ms. Vadra and other officials that the construction of the remaining around 150 houses would be completed by October 31, 2026. All other construction works at the township, including the anganwadi, primary health sub-centres, material collection facility, public toilets, and football court, are expected to be completed by December 31. Funds have been distributed to the victims of the disaster for livelihood-related activities, the official said.
The project officer said work was also under way to install 2-kW solar power systems in the houses.
At the meeting, the Wayanad MP directed officials to prepare an action plan for all roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in the district and complete the works in time.
Ms. Vadra said she had written to the Ministry of Communications over the poor BSNL connectivity at 20 locations in the district and sought the deployment of Cell on Wheels during disasters. Two mobile towers had been sanctioned for Thirunelli Appapara Colony and Panavally, she said.
Ms. Vadra said she had also raised difficulties with the Union government regarding the Poshan Tracker app in areas with poor connectivity. She added that she had reviewed the tuberculosis elimination programme and health issues affecting Adivasi communities with the Centre.
Ms. Vadra said she would discuss the ‘Brand Wayanad Tourism’ initiative with the Tourism Minister and issues concerning Adivasi areas with the Minister for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Development. She also said she had discussed the proposed Tribal University in Wayanad with Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan.
The MP met Forest department officials and discussed issues including human-wildlife conflict in the hill district.
