Pune techie kills pregnant wife by slitting her throat, then jumps from 2nd floor
A 31-year-old software engineer allegedly killed his three-month pregnant wife by slitting her throat before attempting suicide at their rented room in Pune, police said.
Akash Ramdas Baraskar allegedly stabbed himself with a blade after killing his wife, 28-year-old Shubhangi Akash Baraskar, and then jumped from the second floor. He suffered a fractured leg and serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at a government hospital.
Police said the incident took place in the early hours of Sunday. The couple had reportedly been arguing for some time over the purchase of agricultural land in their village. Akash had bought a plot in the village around five to six months ago, but Shubhangi opposed the purchase and wanted property to be bought in Pune instead.
The dispute led to frequent arguments between the couple, according to the complaint filed by Shubhangi's father.
An argument broke out between the couple early on Sunday over the same issue. It allegedly escalated when Akash attacked Shubhangi with a sharp weapon, stabbing her in the neck. She died from her injuries. She was three months pregnant.
After the attack, Akash allegedly stabbed himself with a blade and jumped from the second floor in an attempt to take his own life.
Police arrived at the scene after receiving information and began an investigation. A murder case has been registered against Akash under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), based on Shubhangi's father's complaint.
Police are examining the weapon allegedly used in the attack, evidence collected from the room and the circumstances surrounding the couple's dispute.
A senior police official said Akash had been injured when police arrived and that the investigation indicated he had killed his wife before stabbing himself and jumping from the building.
Akash, who is originally from Wagha village in Ahilyanagar district, works as an IT engineer at a major company in Pune's Hinjewadi area. He was living in a rented accommodation in Dehugaon.
