Punjab cop shot dead on duty, CM Mann announces Rs 1 crore for family
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 crore for the family of assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Harjeet Singh, who was shot dead while performing his duty in Amritsar early Friday. In addition to the government, HDFC Bank will provide an additional Rs 1 crore insurance payout to the family, the Chief Minister said.
Harjeet Singh, around 50, was shot three times on a road in Amritsar's Gate Hakima area at around 2:30 am. The assailants opened fire on him when he was posted on duty in that area.
The injured ASI was rushed to Amandeep Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The cause behind the shooting is not yet ascertained. The police have launched an investigation to determine the reason behind his killing.
In a post on X, Bhagwant Mann paid tribute to Harjit Singh and said his courage and dedication to duty would always be remembered. He also said the Punjab government stood with the family in their hour of grief and was committed to providing every possible support to police personnel and their families.
"A heartfelt salute to the bravery of Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh, who attained martyrdom while performing his duty in Amritsar district. His immense courage and unwavering dedication to duty will always be remembered," Mann wrote on X.
"The Punjab Government stands like a rock with the martyrβs family in this hour of grief. As a mark of respect, the government will provide an ex gratia amount of 1 crore, while HDFC Bank will provide an additional insurance cover of Rs 1 crore to the family. We are fully committed to providing every possible support to our martyrs and their families. His supreme sacrifice will continue to inspire all of us to discharge our duties with utmost courage, honesty, and dedication," he added.
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav is expected to reach Amritsar around 11 am. The slain ASI will be accorded full police honours, the Punjab DGP said.
In a post on X, Gaurav Yadav said Harjit Singh had βlaid down his life in the line of dutyβ and reiterated that the Punjab Police stood firmly with his bereaved family.
"Our brave police officer, ASI Harjit Singh of district Amritsar, has laid down his life in the line of duty. Punjab PoliceInd stands firmly with the bereaved family in their hour of grief," the DGP of Punjab Police wrote.
