Qatar to discuss Tehran proposal with US, Iran separately

Reuters news agency says Qatari mediators are expected to hold separate talks with the United States and Iran on Monday or Tuesday over Tehran's latest proposal.

Reuters cited "an official briefed on the negotiations" in a report issued on Monday.

The meetings are reportedly expected to focus on an amended version of the seven-day proposal that Iran presented via Qatar last week.

The proposal is said to call for a halt to all fighting, including in Lebanon, as well as an end to the US sanctions on Iranian oil and the naval blockade on Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that if the US takes the actions that it is supposed to take, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened and talks between Washington and Tehran, aimed at reaching a final deal, will start.

US President Donald Trump reportedly rejected the proposal.

Reuters said that Araghchi stayed in New York after attending the UN General Assembly and is expected to meet with the mediators.

The news agency said that it was not immediately clear who would represent the US side.

When asked by reporters on Monday if his team had spoken with Iran on that day, Trump said, "Yeah, they have."

He added, "We're going to win." He also said, "It's going to go pretty quickly."
