A diplomatic delegation from Qatar has visited Iran in an apparent effort to avert a renewal of US military attacks against Tehran.

Iran's state-run media reported on Friday that the Qatari mediators had arrived in the country.

Media outlets in the United States say US Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to the Iranian side through Qatar, proposing a restart of peace negotiations between the US and Iran.

The move follows speculation that Washington may launch fresh strikes against Iran after next week's US midterm elections. The proposal is believed to be part of efforts to avert such an offensive.

Iran's response to the letter is still not known.

However, the outlook remains uncertain as the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, has indicated that his country will not compromise on its nuclear development program, on which the US has placed priority.

Meanwhile, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says that three tankers violated Iran's navigation rules for transiting the Strait of Hormuz, and one of them hit a naval mine and burst into flames. The corps says the tanker was carrying more than two million barrels of oil.

Iran remains adamant that the country has the right to control the strait.
