R&B singer Keke Wyatt arrested for terroristic threats, cruelty to children - USA Today
R&B singer Keke Wyatt is facing multiple serious charges after being arrested in Georgia.
Wyatt, 44, was booked into the Henry County jail Sunday, Sept. 20, for terroristic threats, simple assault and cruelty to children, a rep for the Henry County Sheriff's Office confirmed to USA TODAY on Sept. 25. She was released on $1,050 bond after spending two days behind bars.
The circumstances surrounding the musician's arrest remain unclear, but the cruelty to children charge is listed as 3rd Degree Witness offense β a misdemeanor. Under Georgia law, this is when a person, who is the primary aggressor, knowingly allows a minor to witness or be present while an act of violence is being committed.
USA TODAY reached out to a representative for Wyatt for comment.
This comes nearly 25 years after Wyatt was indicted on second-degree assault for stabbing her then-husband Rahmat Morton, who was also her manager. At the time, she said she acted in self defense, and the case was ultimately dismissed.
Wyatt later addressed the incident and opened up about being in an abusive relationship with Morton in a 2012 interview with Essence.
"People are going to say what theyβre going to say. All I know is the average person isnβt going to stab someone just for the heck of it β my life was in danger," she said. "People wonβt understand until they walk in my shoes. I felt so bad for what I did, but I couldnβt let it consume me."
"It was my faith in God, and my family that helped me through this," Wyatt continued. "Those are the people that really know what happened, and they donβt judge me."
The artist rose to fame in the early 2000s for her collaborations with singer Avant. Their duets, "My First Love" and "Nothing in This World," became massive hits.
Wyatt's debut album "Soul Sista" landed No. 5 on Billboard's R&B and hip-hop albums chart. She went on to release several more studio albums, including "Who Knew?" in 2010, "Unbelievable!" in 2011 and "Rated Love" in 2016.
Wyatt has also appeared on television, starring in the popular reality series "R&B Divas: Atlanta" for its entire three-season run from 2012 to 2014. In 2023, she landed her own show, "Keke Wyatt's World," following her life as a working mom to 11 children.
