Veteran racing driver Marcel Angel has died following a serious incident during a race at Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town.
Motorsport South Africa confirmed that the 62-year-old died on Saturday, September 19, 2026, following the incident during the National Extreme Festival. Angel was competing in Race 1 of the Extreme SuperCars category when the incident occurred.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been disclosed.
Extreme Festival organisers confirmed Angel’s death and cancelled the remainder of Saturday’s racing programme.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Marcel Angel, following an incident during Race 1 of the Extreme SuperCars Driven by Dunlop at Killarney International Raceway today,” organisers said in a statement.
They described Angel as a valued member of the motorsport community whose loss would be deeply felt by those who knew and raced alongside him.
Motorsport South Africa also extended its condolences to Angel’s family, friends and fellow competitors.
“Marcel was competing in the Extreme SuperCars category,” the motorsport governing body said.
“Motorsport South Africa extends its sincere condolences to Marcel’s family, friends, fellow competitors and everyone who knew him.”
Angel had a long history in South African motorsport and was the founder of Cape Town motor dealership Autohaus Angel. The company’s profile describes him as a multiple South African championship winner who had competed across several motorsport disciplines and earned South African colours.
Saturday’s National Extreme Festival was the sixth round of the 2026 championship and was scheduled to feature a 16-race programme at Killarney. The remainder of the programme was cancelled following Angel’s death.
Organisers have asked that his family’s privacy be respected.
